Hearts Made for Sacred Space [Read]

What interest could we take in personal holiness except an unceasing revelation of the divine?

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
— Matthew 5:8

The words of our Lord speak not only of a distant future where believers relish in the infinite fullness of his Being, but a foreshadowing of that here and now by virtue of God breaking into creation in the person of Jesus Christ who tabernacles among us.

The heart refers to the physical, emotional and spiritual core of every person and we are to keep it with all vigilance, “for from it flow the springs of life.” If our bodies are temples, then our hearts are the holy of holies—and therefore, sacred space because the Spirit of Christ dwells there. Cleanliness of the human heart bears witness to the Spirit of God at work in and through us.

Our broken world is a familiar world. Far be it from us to conform to its image and likeness. As both heirs of the kingdom of Heaven and citizens of the earth, the battle of each hour is a battle for our heart. Our calling is not to remain pacifists toward any indulgence that would deviate from the desires of the Spirit, but instead, to wage war with the desires of our flesh and embrace our priestly task for our sanctification that the eyes of our hearts may open and therefore see God.
